I thought going to the Base would save me from the sadness I felt. The rest of my MFR batch mates were being deliberated upstairs. Luckily I wasn't one of the 16. Yeah, and that's one of the reasons why I'm sad. It's really hard to see one of us kicked-out just because they don't like us or they take us personally, like the case of one of my batch mates. Nah, I don't think they'll kick anyone out. The Organization is short on volunteers that's why they hired us.
As the others were outside, fussing among themselves about the event, I decided to be alone for a while. The temperature inside the girls' room was evil. I can't even breathe because there were no windows inside. The back door looked inviting to me so I went out and sat on the stairs leading to the third floor. News was supernatural happenings occur here. Dead Chinese dudes show up sometimes along these flight of stairs. Yet, for the sake of silence, peace and solitude, I decided to stay there and be prey for ghosts and other supernatural things.
I brought along my mobile phone with me so that I could listen to sad songs and wallow on my sadness. Somehow I still find it hard to focus on the Now. The Past still stabs me from behind whenever I try to forget and move on. Sigh...at least I learned from my mistakes. It's kinda embarrassing every time I remember what I did. :(
The music I was listening to started to annoy me. I took off my earphones and stared at the gate below. The street was visible. Occasional cars were passing by and I took the glory of counting them. After the tenth car I heard keyboards playing upstairs. It was coming from the boy's room; must be Rodz and Asher practicing "Kasalanan Ba" by Men Oppose. The Christmas Party is fast approaching, you see. I went upstairs to their room. Girls weren't allowed there so I just stayed by their door and asked Rodz to play some more, one which was for Kris, his love. hehe Asher was there, wearing nothing but his favorite red pair of boxer shorts. He sang as Rodz played.
Watching the two of them sing was crazy enough for me. I couldn't help but laugh. Then suddenly the alarm rang. Whew... So much for being the first to respond. I hurriedly dashed down the stairs, left my cellphone on the table and jumped inside the Medic 5 (stepping on GN's foot). Everyone was surprised at how fast I went down the third floor. haha
On-board were 993, 985, Asher, GN and Me. 983 was our pilot. We were advised to proceed in front of Sta. Fe Resort for a vehicular accident. Well, that actually made my heart leap. Asher were all smiles while GN kept her silent composure as she handed me blue nitrile gloves. 985 told us our assignments. Asher was to Airway, GN was to PE and Splinting, while I was assigned for the Head part.
Oookay... What was I supposed to do with the head anyway?
"You'll just have to stabilize it," GN told me.
Oookay, again. That sounds too easy. Stabilizing was meant for me.
We arrived at the scene and found a lot of cars, lights, people (one of them was the caller and she's a member of our Organization's Youth Group) and glass shards. The patient was lying on the floor, his motorcycle on his side. He seemed to have been moved by one of the bystanders in such a position that he was in supine and was not beneath the motorcycle like the usual accidents. Nope, he wasn't wearing a helmet and he's just in his ordinary clothes and pair of slippers. I know... His fault. Asher mentioned that he was drunk.
Nope, not cool. The patient was in a total mess. I hurriedly stabilized his head for possible spinal injury. He had multiple lacerations on his face. He can't even open his eyes! His effin neck was bleeding from a glass shard that penetrated it. There was a possible fracture on his collar bone, too. Yeah. And that site was bleeding profusely. GN applied the c-collar. 985 was telling us to hurry up and administer oxygen. Asher asked 993 to suction the mouth (glass shards were inside, too). 994 suddenly appeared on the scene, must have passed by from a hospital duty because he was still wearing his ER uniform. He applied an OPA to maintain airway so that Asher could give the oxygen.
The patient's face was still bleeding and we're running out of gauze pads. My gloved hands were all covered with blood. The blood reached my pink watch (it's fake anyway) and up to 3/4 of my forearm. It was disgusting and I was speechless and shaking. I was too focused on stabilizing his head that I wasn't even aware that I was kneeling on broken glass.
The unfortunate guy collided with a car. Medic 1 was in charge of doing the extrication stuff because the driver got really stuck. It was an all-girl team for them so 985 and 993 went there to help them.
After that we successfully loaded the patient to the ambulance. His face was still bleeding, so unrecognizable. 991 went in and started the venoclysis himself (the cutest ER nurse I've ever seen). Sigh... The patient became restless and I was tasked to restrain him. Yes, me. Asher placed a thermal blanket on him to treat for shock. I was shaking when I wiped the blood off his face.
We transported the patient to the most popular public hospital in our city. As expected, he never got the prompt treatment he needed. The ER nurses were just passing by him and the doctors were just asking what happened to him and who he was with. They never even made another effort to control the bleeding.
Then the patient's mother arrived and spat out curses in front of us. She was dismayed by the condition of her son. If I were in her shoes, I would've cried otherwise.
The stretcher and floor were drenched with his blood but still the staff nurses did nothing and just stood at their station. If only there were student nurses there...
We have no choice but to leave the patient there. I convinced the mother that his son should be treated here instead of transferring him to a private hospital because it would only worsen his condition. And so the four of us left, pissed off by the stupidity of others and pity for the unfortunate guy. However, Asher was smiling, telling us it was the best moment of his life. To GN it was nothing. She was used to VA's anyway. But me, I never thought about seeing "the real thing".
From this experience I've realized that there's still a lot to improve especially on my skills. As 991 have said, "You got stinky. You got bloody. But you saved a life." Cool. I was too tired after that and I had to borrow Asher's shampoo to get myself cleaned up. I left him cleaning the rest of the bloody equipment and I went to sleep after watching Cabin Fever 2.
